Thann, an Alsatian city under Habsburg suzerainty, struck this small silver piece during the opening years of the Thirty Years' War — a moment when regional minting exploded across the Empire as central authority collapsed and local authorities scrambled to fill the currency vacuum. The proliferation of small emergency coinage from this period is staggering; Thann's issues are among the more obscure survivals from that wave.
E&L#44 places this squarely within Engel and Lehr's classification of Alsatian municipal coinage, a reference framework still foundational for this region.
