This piece is part of Panama's "Monedas de la Historia" collector series, which drew on colonial-era architectural heritage rather than the independence iconography that dominates most Latin American commemorative programs. The Convent of the Conception — founded in Panama City in 1597 by the Order of the Immaculate Conception — survived the infamous 1671 buccaneer sack of Panama Viejo led by Henry Morgan, though only as ruins. Those ruins remain a UNESCO World Heritage Site today.
