Obverse description The obverse features the national coat of arms of Panama displayed centrally within the coin's field, depicting a quartered shield supported by decorative scrollwork and flanked by lush foliage on either side. The shield bears the motto scroll reading PRO MUNDI BENEFICIO across its upper section, with a harquebus and sabre crossed in the first quarter, a shovel and pickaxe in the second, and the Isthmus of Panama with ships on both coasts in the lower half. A Harpy eagle with spread wings surmounts the shield, encircled above by a arc of nine five-pointed stars. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE PANAMA arcs along the upper rim, while the silver fineness LEY 0.900 appears to the left and the weight GR. 12.50 to the right of the arms; the date 1961 is inscribed along the lower rim.
