Obverse description A Roman fasces — a bound bundle of rods with an axe blade projecting to one side — stands upright in the center of the field, surmounted by a Phrygian cap of liberty, symbolizing the republican ideals of the short-lived Roman Republic. The legend REPUBBLICA ROMANA encircles the central device, reading around the periphery within a milled border. The composition is rendered in a bold, somewhat primitive style characteristic of the emergency coinage of the period.
