Rama V — Chulalongkorn — ascended the throne in 1868 at fifteen years old, and the early pattern coinages of his reign reflect a court actively negotiating between Siamese monetary tradition and European minting conventions. This copper piece predates the formal modernization of the Thai monetary system that followed his 1873 assumption of full executive power, placing it in the experimental window when foreign advisors and the Bangkok mint were still testing formats that might satisfy both domestic circulation and Western trading partners. Most never advanced beyond pattern status.
