Aversbeschreibung Central field bears the Portuguese Royal Coat of Arms within a shield, flanked on either side by the mint letter 'D' and 'O' (for Dio, the Goa mint mark), dividing the legend. The shield displays the traditional quinas (five escutcheons) of the Portuguese crown in a crude, hammered style characteristic of colonial Portuguese Indian coinage. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded or rope-edged border. The overall execution reflects the hand-struck technique typical of this series, with uneven strike and irregular flan edges.

Reversbeschreibung Central device depicts the Cross of the Military Order of Christ, a pattée cross with splayed arms, dividing the date into four quadrants as read around the cross. The date numerals appear in the angles of the cross, presented in two pairs separated by the cross arms. The design is contained within a beaded or rope-edged circular border, consistent with the obverse. The hammered strike gives the cross a bold but slightly irregular appearance, typical of Portuguese colonial copper coinage of this period.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Portuguese India's copper coinage of this period was produced under the authority of Goa's mint, where production was chronically irregular — output depended heavily on copper supply chains that ran through Lisbon and were frequently disrupted by Atlantic shipping losses. The joint reign attribution to Maria I and Pedro III reflects the constitutional arrangement in place from Maria's accession in 1777 until Pedro's death in 1786, after which Maria ruled alone and coinage types were updated accordingly.

The "Duganis" denomination is a Portuguese phonetic rendering of the local Konkani monetary unit, a pragmatic concession to the currency vocabulary already in use across Goa's markets.
