José I's Indian copper issues were struck at Dio (Diu), the small peninsula on the Gujarat coast that Portugal had held since 1535 — one of the few Estado da India mints still functioning as Lisbon's grip on the subcontinent contracted through the mid-eighteenth century. The "Duganis" denomination reflects the local currency vocabulary absorbed from the Gujarati trading economy, not any metropolitan Portuguese monetary unit.
The twelve-year striking window spanning Gomes Jo 39 and Jo 40 suggests at least two distinct emission periods, likely separated by a die replacement or minor administrative interruption at the Diu facility.
