Reverse description Central field features a large cross of the Order of Christ, boldly struck and occupying most of the reverse. The date numerals appear vertically or at an angle within the quadrants formed by the cross, consistent with known varieties. A beaded inner circle borders the design, with a similarly beaded outer border following the coin's circumference. The lettering D-O appears as a mintmark or initial mark associated with the Diu mint.

Additional information

José I's Indian copper issues were struck at Dio (Diu), the small peninsula on the Gujarat coast that Portugal had held since 1535 — one of the few Estado da India mints still functioning as Lisbon's grip on the subcontinent contracted through the mid-eighteenth century. The "Duganis" denomination reflects the local currency vocabulary absorbed from the Gujarati trading economy, not any metropolitan Portuguese monetary unit.

The twelve-year striking window spanning Gomes Jo 39 and Jo 40 suggests at least two distinct emission periods, likely separated by a die replacement or minor administrative interruption at the Diu facility.
