Obverse description Draped bust of King Aphilas facing right, wearing a headcloth ornamented along the front and terminating in a triangular ribbon at the rear. Above the effigy, a pellet set upon a crescent divides the Greek legend arranged around the upper field. The whole design is enclosed within a border of dots. The selective gilt treatment imparts a distinctive two-tone appearance characteristic of Aksumite royal coinage of this period.
