Ahalya Bai Holkar ruled Indore from 1767 until her death in 1795, widely regarded as one of the most capable administrators of 18th-century India. She came to power after the deaths of her husband and father-in-law in quick succession, navigating Maratha court politics to govern in her own name — unusual enough to be remarkable, rarer still that her coinage circulated under her name directly rather than a male regent's.
