| Reverse description | Frontal facing bust of Saint Ambrose, patron saint of Milan, depicted in episcopal vestments with a nimbus (halo) encircling his head, rendered in a hieratic Byzantine-influenced style typical of Milanese medieval coinage. The saint's facial features, mitre, and draped robes are rendered in relief within a beaded inner circle. Small ornamental pellets or trefoil stops punctuate the surrounding Latin legend invoking the saint's name. The irregular flan and bold relief are consistent with hammered gold production of mid-fourteenth-century Milan. |
