The Amani coinage was introduced as part of Amanullah Khan's sweeping modernization program following Afghan independence from British suzerainty in 1919. The Amani itself was a new monetary unit he imposed — one Amani equal to twenty Afghani — a system that collapsed within years as his broader reforms, including mandatory Western dress and the unveiling of women, triggered the Khost rebellion and ultimately his abdication in 1929.
The three-year window of this issue reflects exactly how short-lived the experiment was.
