Amanullah Khan introduced the Amani as Afghanistan's new gold currency unit in 1920, part of a sweeping modernization drive launched immediately after securing full independence from British control over Afghan foreign affairs following the Third Anglo-Afghan War. The half Amani was struck at the Kabul mint, which operated with equipment and technical capacity far below European standards — accounting for the irregular planchets and inconsistent strike quality endemic to the series.
Amanullah's reforms ultimately cost him his throne; conservative backlash against Westernization forced his abdication in 1929.
