Additional information

The Mutawakkilite Kingdom occupied an increasingly precarious position through the late 1950s and early 1960s, with Imam Ahmad bin Yahya fighting off a 1955 coup attempt and navigating tense relations with both the UAR and Saudi Arabia simultaneously. Silver coinage from his reign continued the traditional Islamic reckoning of the Hijri calendar, placing these issues in AH dates that can mislead collectors unfamiliar with the conversion. The Y#16.2 variety is distinguished from Y#16.1 solely by the orientation of the mint name — a die modification whose precise timing within the 1958–1963 window has never been definitively documented.
