| Popis rubu | The central field contains a multi-line inscription within an oval or cartouche border, reading the denomination and fineness specification across four lines: XVI / AUF EIN / REICHS / THAL., with the mintmaster's mark W appearing below in the field. The date appears at the top of the reverse, above the central cartouche, surmounted by a small crown. A circular Latin legend is distributed around the outer rim, completing the well-known German proverbial phrase split across both sides of the coin. The lettering is bold and characteristic of hammered coinage from the Clausthal mint. |

Brunswick-Lüneburg-Celle was still absorbing the devastation of the Thirty Years' War when these pieces were struck — the Peace of Westphalia wasn't signed until October 1648, meaning the earlier dies were produced while the conflict was technically ongoing. Frederick IV had ruled Celle since 1636 and managed the duchy through some of its worst years of occupation and troop quartering. Small-denomination silver of this type circulated heavily in the postwar reconstruction economy, which goes some way toward explaining why survivors in presentable condition are scarce.
