| 表面の説明 | Draped bust of Duke Frederick III facing right, wearing armour with an elaborately decorated breastplate and a lace collar, his long wavy hair falling to his shoulder. The portrait is rendered in a baroque style typical of mid-17th century German coinage. A beaded inner circle frames the effigy, with the legend reading FRIDERICVS D G around the periphery within a toothed outer border. |

Frederick III ruled Gottorp during one of the most destructive phases of the Thirty Years' War, and the small fractional thalers issued under his name reflect the chronic silver shortage that plagued north German minting throughout the 1640s. The Duchy's mint at Husum was intermittently active, and output of these sixteenth-thaler pieces was irregular enough that examples struck across the full date range are rarely encountered together.
Frederick later channeled considerable resources into transforming Gottorf Castle into a baroque cultural center, but during the war years his mint was firmly in austerity mode.
