| Reverse description | Three ornate crested helmets arranged side by side within a beaded inner circle, each surmounted by elaborate plume and crest decorations typical of early seventeenth-century German heraldic coinage. The denomination numeral '16' appears in the lower field beneath the helmets, denoting the 1⁄16 Thaler value. The surrounding circular legend incorporates the date 1617 and the ducal title abbreviations, reading DVX. SCHLES: H. HOLSA. 1617 16, distributed around the periphery in Latin. |

| Additional information |
Frederick III of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp was only eleven years old in 1617, ruling under regency following the death of his father John Adolf the previous year. This fractional thaler belongs to the regency coinage issued in his name — a period when the duchy's finances were being managed by administrators rather than the duke himself. The Thirty Years' War was still a year away from igniting, but the political fractures that would define that conflict were already visible in the divided Holstein territories.
