Regensburg's fractional gold coinage of this period reflects the city's peculiar status as host to the Immerwährender Reichstag — the Perpetual Diet of the Holy Roman Empire, which sat there continuously from 1663 until Napoleon dissolved it in 1806. The diplomatic traffic that generated made hard, small-denomination gold a practical necessity for daily transactions among ambassadors, clerks, and petty officials.
