The fractional Libertad gold series was introduced in 1981, with the 1/15 onza added later as Mexico expanded the range to give smaller investors and collectors access to the program. The 1987 date falls within a period of acute economic stress in Mexico — the peso had collapsed following the 1982 debt crisis, and gold coin sales were partly driven by domestic demand for hard-asset protection. Ironically, most buyers were foreign, as Mexican citizens had limited means to acquire them at prevailing prices.
KM#628 is a short-lived type; the 1/15 onza denomination was not struck every year and saw only limited mintage runs.
