Charles of Lorraine was elected Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück in 1698 under the terms of the 1648 Peace of Westphalia, which had established an alternating succession between Catholic and Lutheran bishops — a compromise unique to this diocese. He was the last Catholic bishop to hold the see before the alternation returned it to a Protestant incumbent. This fractional thaler dates to the final years of his episcopate, issued as the War of the Spanish Succession was drawing Lorraine and its political affiliates deeper into the broader Habsburg orbit.
