Rudolph August and Anthony Ulrich co-ruled Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel from 1685 until Rudolph August's death in 1704 — an awkward dual-duchy arrangement in which the elder Rudolph August held nominal primacy while the younger, more ambitious Anthony Ulrich increasingly dominated actual governance. The "var." designation against Welter 2105 suggests a die variant not fully catalogued in the standard reference, which is unsurprising for a denomination struck across multiple dies in the final years of their joint rule.
