Christian Ludwig II spent much of his reign navigating the financial wreckage left by the Seven Years' War's preliminary disruptions and the persistent drain of maintaining court expenditures against a relatively thin tax base. The designation *Landmünze* — literally "land coin" — signals this was intended for internal circulation within the duchy rather than for trade, a distinction that mattered legally under the Holy Roman Empire's tangled monetary ordinances. Billon issues of this type were frequently the first coinage debased when a minor German state's treasury came under pressure.
