Charles of Lorraine held the Bishopric of Osnabrück under the terms of the Peace of Westphalia (1648), which mandated that the see alternate between Catholic and Lutheran incumbents. He was the Catholic turn — a Habsburg prince-bishop who never set foot in Osnabrück to govern in person. The brief 1702–1704 window of his coinage falls squarely within the War of the Spanish Succession, when Habsburg resources and attention were stretched thin across Europe.
Kennepohl's study of Osnabrück coinage remains the definitive reference for this series. KM#177 and Kennepohl#311 align without conflict on this type.
