Adolphus Frederick III ruled Mecklenburg-Strelitz for just over two decades following the duchy's formal partition in 1701, when the House of Mecklenburg divided into the Schwerin and Strelitz lines. This coin belongs to the very first years of that newly independent court — Strelitz was still establishing its administrative and fiscal machinery when the dies were cut.
Kunzel 547 A/a places this among the earliest documented emissions of the Strelitz series proper.
