Anhalt's fractional coinage of the 1680s reflects the principality's unusual collective rule — five co-princes simultaneously held authority over the fragmented Anhalt territories following the inheritance arrangements that had divided the house since 1603. Issuing a coin under five names was not vanity; it was constitutional necessity, each ruler's assent theoretically required for acts of governance including, nominally, the right of coinage.
Emanuel Lebrecht was still a minor when this type was struck, his name included by legal obligation rather than any practical authority.
