These small silver fractions were struck at Dresden during the opening years of Stanisław August Poniatowski's reign, when the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's own mint infrastructure was inadequate to meet immediate coinage demand. The Dresden facility — operated under Saxon arrangements — produced this run across multiple die marriages, hence the span of five Kopicki reference numbers covering what is essentially one short-issue type.
Poniatowski had been placed on the throne in 1764 largely through Russian pressure and the personal intervention of Catherine the Great, his former lover. The "Polish Prince" titulature on this issue reflects the transitional political framing of his early reign before full royal styling was consolidated.
