Jersey issued this piece in 1966 to mark the 900th anniversary of the Norman Conquest — an event of particular local significance given that Jersey itself is a remnant of the Duchy of Normandy, placing the island politically closer to the victors at Hastings than to England. The States of Jersey has never been part of the United Kingdom proper, a constitutional quirk traceable directly to that 1066 conquest and the subsequent attachment of the Duchy to the English Crown.
The bronze composition links it to the pre-decimal series it accompanied, which was replaced entirely in 1971 when Jersey adopted decimalization.
