Honoré II secured formal recognition of Monegasque sovereignty from Louis XIII in 1633 — the Treaty of Péronne ending nearly a century of Spanish suzerainty and reorienting Monaco firmly within the French orbit. These small silver fractions were struck in the years following that realignment, when the principality adopted French monetary conventions wholesale, including the écu system and its subdivisions.
