Leopold I issued these fractional gold pieces from the Breslau mint during the long stretch of Habsburg consolidation in Silesia — a region acquired by the Habsburgs in 1526 but never fully culturally absorbed. The 1⁄12 ducat denomination was essentially a local convenience coin, thin enough and small enough to circulate among merchants navigating the complicated dual economy of the Silesian trading towns, where imperial coinage competed with Bohemian and Brandenburg issues simultaneously.
Breslau retained its own mint privileges well into the late seventeenth century, an unusual concession for a provincial city. The fineness of .986 gold is characteristic of ducat-standard coinage held to the Reichsmünzordnung.
