Nepal's gold Asarfi series, issued by Nepal Rastra Bank under Gyanendra Bir Bikram, appeared during one of the most turbulent stretches in modern Nepali history — the Maoist insurgency was at its peak in 2002, and Gyanendra had only recently assumed the throne following the royal massacre of June 2001 that killed nine members of the ruling family. The Buddha denomination carries particular weight here: Lumbini, the accepted birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, lies in the Terai lowlands of Nepal itself.
