The Noble series launched in 1983 made the Isle of Man one of the earliest jurisdictions to issue platinum bullion coinage for the collector and investor market, entering a field then dominated almost entirely by the Platinum Maple Leaf and Soviet Norilsk-sourced bars. The Machin effigy used here — Arnold Machin's portrait first adopted for decimal coinage in 1968 — was already being phased out on Isle of Man issues in favor of the Raphael Maklouf portrait, making 1984 one of the last years this particular obverse appears on Manx platinum.
