| Obverse description | Central device features the interlaced monogram of the Honourable East India Company — the letters E, I, and C intertwined within a heart-shaped ornamental frame, surmounted by a cross above and flanked by decorative scroll elements on either side. A small star or rosette appears at the base of the central device. The date 1788 is incorporated into the legend, with the abbreviated issuer name VEIC appearing in the field. The coin is encircled by a milled or toothed border. The overall style is characteristic of late 18th-century Company coinage struck for the Penang (Prince of Wales Island) settlement. |
