正面描述 Armored bust of Philip II of Spain facing right, wearing a ruffled collar and cuirass, with the date 1572 divided to either side of the effigy in the lower field. The surrounding legend reads PHS.D.G.HISPZREX.COES.HOL, identifying Philip by the grace of God as King of the Spains and Count of Holland. The portrait is rendered in the characteristic late-Renaissance style of the Spanish Netherlands, with coarse hammered relief typical of the period. The flan is irregular and slightly undersized, consistent with contemporary hammered coinage of the Low Countries.

附加信息

Holland struck this fractional issue in 1572 — the same year William of Orange's Sea Beggars seized Brielle and Den Briel, effectively opening the Dutch Revolt in earnest. The province's mints were suddenly producing coinage for a population in active rebellion against the very king whose name and authority the coin still bore. Philip II remained the nominal sovereign on Holland's coinage for years after his authority there had collapsed in practice.
