| Reverse description | A crowned coat of arms of Burgundy-Austria, consisting of the quartered heraldic shield surmounted by a royal crown, occupying the center of the flan. The surrounding legend DOMINVS · MIHI · ADIVTOR (The Lord is my helper) is inscribed around the periphery in capital letters separated by pellets. The design is characteristic of the Philipsdaalder series issued for the County of Holland, displaying the dynastic arms of the Spanish Habsburgs in a bold, simplified hammered style. The irregular flan shows typical weakness and die shift at the margins. |

Holland struck this fractional issue in 1572 — the same year William of Orange's Sea Beggars seized Brielle and Den Briel, effectively opening the Dutch Revolt in earnest. The province's mints were suddenly producing coinage for a population in active rebellion against the very king whose name and authority the coin still bore. Philip II remained the nominal sovereign on Holland's coinage for years after his authority there had collapsed in practice.
