The Isle of Man's annual cat coin program, launched in 1988, was one of the more commercially calculated bullion series of the late twentieth century — each year's design change was a deliberate strategy to drive collector demand beyond the melt value. The 1993 Maine Coon issue arrived at a moment when the series had already built a genuine secondary market, with date collectors actively completing sets.
The Maine Coon is one of the few natural breeds traceable to North America, with documented show records going back to the 1860s in New England — its selection for this issue was a nod to the export market in the United States.
