The Angel series was launched by the Isle of Man in 1984 as a direct competitor to the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf, targeting the bullion investor market at a moment when gold coin ownership had recently been re-legalized in the United States. Pobjoy Mint, a private Surrey-based operation rather than a state mint, struck these under contract — an unusual arrangement that gave the Isle of Man's Treasury considerable flexibility in design and release scheduling that Royal Mint clients rarely enjoyed.
The two Schön references reflect a documented variation in the fineness statement appearing on early 1984 strikings.
