The Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen operated in near-total economic isolation through much of Imam Ahmad's reign, with silver coinage minted domestically at Sana'a using rudimentary equipment that produced notoriously inconsistent planchets. This fractional issue was struck to a standard tied to the Maria Theresa Thaler, the coin that dominated commercial exchange across the Arabian Peninsula far more reliably than any domestic emission.
