The Junta de la Administración de la Casa de Moneda was the monetary arm of the Buenos Aires provincial government — not a national institution, since Argentina had no central bank until 1826, and that experiment collapsed. By 1847, the Junta was operating under the long shadow of Rosas-era fiscal pressure, issuing paper against a metallic reserve that had been chronically insufficient since at least the 1820s. The peso moneda corriente had already depreciated so severely that a 1,000-peso denomination, once unthinkable, had become routine.
Printed locally rather than contracted abroad, which was unusual for the period and accounts for the comparatively crude execution seen across the series.
