The Banco del Perú was one of several private commercial banks operating under Peru's free banking period in the 1870s and early 1880s — a system that collapsed spectacularly during the War of the Pacific, when the Chilean occupation of Lima in 1881 triggered bank runs, suspension of convertibility, and the eventual liquidation of most issuing institutions. Notes from these banks became worthless almost overnight, which is why high-denomination issues like this one rarely survived in any quantity.
American Bank Note Company supplied plates to most of Peru's private banks during this period, often recycling vignette elements across multiple clients.
