Banco da China is one of three commercial banks licensed to issue pataca banknotes in Macau — the others being Banco Nacional Ultramarino and Banco Multibanco Caixa Geral de Depósitos. This arrangement, a legacy of the Portuguese colonial banking framework that survived the 1999 handover, means Macau operates without a central bank of issue in the conventional sense. The Monetary Authority of Macao oversees the system but does not itself print currency.
The 1,000 pataca denomination is the highest in regular circulation. At current exchange rates it sits just above USD 125, making it a high-value working note rather than a prestige issue.
