Obverse description The obverse presents a bond certificate layout on a multicoloured guilloche underprint in shades of blue, violet, and pink. Azerbaijan's first independent currency series arrived amid catastrophic inflation — by 1993 the manat was losing value faster than notes could be printed. The 1,000 manat was a high denomination at issue; within two years it was effectively worthless pocket change, and the entire series was superseded by a second manat introduced in 2006 at a redenomination rate of 5,000 old to 1 new.
