The K.u.K. Staats-Central-Casse — the Imperial-Royal State Central Treasury — issued notes directly under state authority rather than through the Privilegirte Oesterreichische National-Bank, a distinction that matters here. The 1853 date places this note in the years immediately following the Sylvester Patent and the fiscal strain of suppressing the 1848–49 revolutions, when the Habsburg treasury was badly stretched and state-issued paper carried genuine redemption risk.
At 1000 Gulden, this is the highest denomination of the series — a sum equivalent to years of skilled wages — meaning circulation was narrow, confined almost entirely to merchant and institutional transactions. Surviving examples are rare precisely because notes of this value were typically presented for redemption rather than retained.
