The Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale — known by its French acronym BEAC — serves six CFA franc zone member states across Central Africa, meaning a single note series circulates simultaneously in Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon. The remarkably long run of near-identical signature combinations here, with Mamalepot holding his position across every date in the series while the counter-signatory rotates, reflects the institutional stability the BEAC projected during a decade when several of its member states were anything but stable politically.
The 1994 date is particularly significant: the CFA franc was devalued by 50 percent against the French franc on January 12 of that year — the first devaluation since the currency's creation in 1945, and a shock that effectively halved the purchasing power of every note already in circulation.
