French Equatorial Africa had no banknote printing infrastructure of its own in 1940, and the fall of France in June of that year created an acute problem: metropolitan supply lines were severed almost immediately. This particular issue was produced locally under emergency conditions, which accounts for the relatively crude execution compared to the Paris-printed series it replaced. De Larminat's signature is significant — he was one of the earliest senior French military figures to join de Gaulle's Free French movement, doing so within days of the armistice.
The perfin security feature, rather than a printed watermark, reflects the improvised nature of the issue. High-denomination notes authenticated by hole-punch rather than papermaking technology are a reliable indicator of wartime constraint.
