The Chartered Bank was already operating under borrowed time when this note was printed — the institution had merged with the Standard Bank of South Africa in 1969 to form Standard Chartered, yet continued issuing Hong Kong currency under its old name well into the late 1970s under the territory's unique three-bank note-issuing arrangement. Bradbury, Wilkinson's New Malden facility produced the series with the high-denomination security standards expected of a $1,000 face value instrument, though the watermark remains the primary overt feature.
This would be among the final issues before Standard Chartered Bank took over the issuing name entirely in 1982.
