Bolivia's hyperinflation of 1984–85 was among the worst in recorded Latin American history, peaking at an annualized rate exceeding 20,000 percent. The million-peso boliviano denomination wasn't an outlier — it was a practical necessity, and even then, barely adequate for routine transactions. The Banco Central ultimately redenominated in late 1985, replacing the peso boliviano at a rate of one million to one with the new boliviano, effectively erasing this note's face value on arrival.
Printed by Argentina's Casa de Moneda in Buenos Aires, the note reflects Bolivia's reliance on foreign minting capacity throughout the crisis — domestic infrastructure couldn't keep pace with demand.
