Actien-Gesellschaft für Anilin-Fabrikation — better known as AGFA — was already one of Germany's dominant photographic and chemical manufacturers when hyperinflation forced it, like thousands of other industrial firms, to issue its own emergency currency in 1923. This Wolfen plant note is Notgeld in the strict sense: privately issued, locally valid, a workaround for a Reich monetary system that had effectively collapsed. The Wolfen facility was the company's main film production site, distinct from the Leverkusen dye works.
The watermark is the detail worth noting — relatively uncommon for industrial Notgeld at this denomination level, where speed of production usually outweighed security concerns.
