The Verein der Bergwerke am linken Niederrhein was a coal mining association operating in the Moers district on the west bank of the Rhine — a region that had been under Franco-Belgian military occupation since January 1923. The Ruhr occupation directly triggered the wave of emergency currency these industrial associations were forced to issue: the Reichsbank could not supply adequate banknotes as hyperinflation accelerated, and occupied industrial concerns were simultaneously cut off from normal financial channels while continuing to pay wages.
Mining association notgeld from the occupied Rhineland-Ruhr zone was typically short-lived in circulation, redeemed or rendered worthless within weeks of issue as denomination ceilings became meaningless.
