The Sächsisches Steinkohlen-Syndikat — the Saxon hard coal syndicate based in Zwickau — was among the industrial firms authorized to issue emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to meet demand. This practice, known as Notgeld, extended well beyond municipalities; major employers issued their own denominated paper specifically to pay wages, since workers needed cash in hand before it lost another fraction of its value by afternoon.
A coal syndicate issuing a million-mark note tells you exactly where Germany was by mid-1923.
