A central oval vignette presents a detailed view of the Rheinische Stahlwerke main administration building, rendered with fine crosshatching and surrounded by an ornate cartouche of scrollwork and starburst devices. The denomination '1000 000' appears in boxed numerals at each of the four corners, while symmetrical foliate ornaments at the left and right each incorporate the interlaced monogram 'RSW'. |

Rheinische Stahlwerke was one of the major Ruhr industrial firms that began issuing its own emergency currency — Notgeld — during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsmark was collapsing fast enough that workers needed to be paid in something spendable before wages lost all value between Friday and Monday. The steel company printed and distributed this note directly through its payroll operation at the Duisburg-Meiderich works.
By the time million-mark denominations became necessary, the Rentenmark stabilization was only weeks away. Many of these industrial Notgeld issues were redeemed and pulped almost immediately, which keeps surviving examples genuinely scarce despite the enormous print runs that hyperinflation demanded.
